CANNES 2005 Un Certain Regard

Falscher Bekenner : Into the greyness of life

by

Discovered in 2003 with his first feature film, This Very Moment, the German filmmaker Christoph Hochhäusler has confirmed the good opinions critics have about his talent as a creator of atmosphere with his second film Falscher Bekenner (Low Profile) screened today in the section Un Certain Regard. Acted by the young and charismatic Constantin Vonjascheroff, the film explores with sharp accuracy a post-adolescent's ordinary and uneasy daily life who doesn't succeed in finding his place within the society, nor in defining his identity, especially the sexual one. An inactivity that will lead him to anonymously claim accidents and criminal acts he doesn't have anything to do with.

Wandering around night and day on the side of a motorway, dragging on a job interview to another one with absurd and mechanical recruitment methods, young Arnim feels the worried hopes of this family and the comparison with his older brothers. On his tracks, the camera never leaves him and dives in the grey every day life and the mediocrity of human beings, modern quicksand littered with TV news and coarse moments of homosexuality. Christoph Hochhäusler manages to bring up this realistic and depressive universe from an undefined script (written by himself) thanks to his sense of characters and a subtle treatment of Arnim's lonely and laconic wanderings.

Produced by the German company Heimatfilm and supported by the North Rhine Westphalia Filmstiftung for post-production, Falscher Bekenner is sold internationally by the Danish Trust Film Sales. It has also to be noticed that, in the frame of the German presence in Cannes, Benjamin Heisenberg, co-founder with Christoph Hochhäusler of the film magazine Revolver (in which the Dogma 95 has been published), will also be under the spotlights of Un Certain Regard next Wednesday with his first feature film, Schläfer.
