film profile], is set to have its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 69th Berlin International Film Festival (7-17 February).
Set in a small eel-farming town on the west coast of Greece, The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea follows two women who dream of escaping their mundane lives. Elisabeth (Angeliki Papoulia) used to be an over-ambitious policewoman when she was working in Athens ten years ago, but after her relocation to the swampy provincial town, her life has become joyless. Meanwhile, Rita (Youla Boudali) is a lonely, poor eel-hatchery worker and the mysterious sister of a lounge singer in the local disco. An unexpected death will cause upset in the small town’s local community, but will also bring these two distant women closer. Suddenly, hidden secrets will begin to surface, as the swamps are no longer able to hold them. The rest of the cast comprises Christos Passalis (Dogtooth [+see also:

The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea is a Greek-Dutch-German-Swedish co-production by Maria Drandaki (Homemade Films), in co-production with Ellen Havenith (PRPL), Titus Kreyenberg (unafilm), Olle Wirenhed (Dragon Films), Film i Väst and ZDF/ARTE. The film has received the support of the Greek Film Centre, Film und Medienstiftung NRW, the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, the Swedish Film Institute, ERT SA, Eurimages and MEDIA. Polish outfit New Europe Film Sales handles the world sales.
