The European Film Academy (EFA) announced the nominees for the European Film Awards at a ceremony held on Saturday at the 16th Seville European Film Festival. It’s an edition dominated by big names: none other than Pedro Almodóvar, Marco Bellocchio and Roman Polanski are topping the nominations with four each. , have all nabbed nominations in the European Film, Director, Screenplay and Actor categories (Antonio Banderas, Pierfrancesco Favino and Jean Dujardin, respectively).

Right beside the three masters, Yorgos Lanthimos has also received four nominations for his latest opus The Favourite [+see also:

, which was already nominated in the European Comedy category, and is now duking it out in the European Film, Director and Actress categories (for Olivia Colman’s Oscar-winning performance).

, is shining too with three nominations, in the European Director (making it the only female director nominated), Screenplay and Actress (for both Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant) categories. Beyond this, the biggest surprises came from debutant filmmakers Ladj Ly and Nora Fingscheidt, whose debut films Les Misérables [+see also:

are nominated in the European Film category.

As usual, the categories announced beforehand were European Comedy (read news) and European Animated Film (news), European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI (news), European Short Film (news) and People’s Choice Award (news).

The awards ceremony will take place once again in Berlin on 7 December. Before that, the Academy will present the winners of the technical European Film Awards (in the categories of cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, composer and sound design).
