Ventana Sur homes in on Latin America

As has already been made public, the 12th edition of Ventana Sur won’t be taking place as usual in Buenos Aires; rather, it will adopt a hybrid format, bringing its leading programmes to the digital world (see the news). This year’s edition is launching today, 30 November, and it will run until 4 December.

Uspooling during this most uncertain period, the panels at Ventana Sur will aim to trigger an exchange of ideas while also empowering the film community in its search for alternatives for the future. Furthermore, the coming years are sure to bring digital platforms to the forefront, and the market will present the emerging new roles for authors and new trends in storytelling and beyond in this digital era.

Through two case studies, the leading OTT streamers in the global market – and of course in Latin America as well – Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, will be showcased. Amazon has gained an important foothold in the region with its original productions and strategic partners. Also, Netflix has its eye on two different avenues in order to continue its expansion, related to complications in production and incentives for consumption. The new map being created will also be explored, and the ways in which new players can reposition themselves will be in the spotlight.

Investigating the special needs of four major markets – the Americas, Europe, the Middle and the Far East – another series of panels will investigate co-productions and new business models along with the future prospects for audiovisual markets in the post-COVID era. This will be accompanied by an overview of the numerous funding options available around the world, according to research conducted by Projeto Paradiso, Brazilian Content and Cinema do Brasil together with LatAm cinema.

In the Animation! section, a series of discussions will focus on the challenges and the strategies related to the development of characters or various elements of the narrative. Also, Russian studio Animaccord Animation, the creator of the series Masha and the Bear, will present its success story, from development all the way up to the realisation of the project. In a similar vein, US cable network Adult Swim will hold a conference on the success of the series Rick and Morty.

The Punto Genero section, focused on the inclusion of women and non-binaries in the industry, aims to unmask harassment and bullying by listening and giving a platform to Latin American individuals and collectives that, through their actions, are seeking to bring about changes to safeguard their integrity and ensure equality between female and male workers. As part of these discussions, another talk will attempt to investigate the protocols that can be used to change work culture, and exchange perspectives, strategies and challenges.

As Ventana Sur highlights, the goal of this edition is to create opportunities to develop maximum potential, radicalise filmmaking from the storytelling and aesthetic points of view, and offer audiences more – and better – experiences.
