It was not an evening to celebrate European productions. Announced last night during a pandemic-proof, hybrid ceremony, the 78^th Golden Globes overlooked most of the contingent sent by Europe (which was led by Florian Zeller’s The Father [+lee también:

ficha de la película] in the film categories - see the news) and went on to pick mostly US-produced titles as its winners (such as Best Motion Picture - Drama winner Nomadland, which also saw its director Chloé Zhao being crowned as Best Director, only the second time in history this award was bestowed upon a woman). It might not have been a surprise, given that the most atypical awards season in recent history is proving to be somewhat middling, although some predictions included a bigger European presence among the list of winners.

Even after leading the nominations in the Best Picture - Foreign Language category (with Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round [+lee también:

ficha de la película]), Europe was dismayed to see Lee Isaac-Chung's Minari, an all-US production mostly spoken in Korean, take home the statuette. Curiously, one of those films did end up making off with an award, when Laura Pausini’s song “Io sì (Seen)” (written by herself alongside Diane Warren and Niccolò Agliardi for the Sophia Loren-starring film by Edoardo Ponti) was crowned by the voters.

However, some European acting talent did manage to get their slice of the cake, such as Rosamund Pike, who won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her work in J Blakeson’s British comedy-thriller I Care a Lot [+lee también:

ficha de la película], and Daniel Kaluuya, who won Best Supporting Actor, but for a 100% US production, Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah. The UK-US co-production The Mauritanian [+lee también:

ficha de la película], directed by Kevin Macdonald, did get some love though, through Jodie Foster’s Best Supporting Actress win.

In this situation, the biggest triumph for European production were the multiple wins for Peter Morgan’s The Crown, led by the Best TV Series – Drama Award, a prize that it had already received back in 2017, for its first season. The series’ acting troupe was the most celebrated of the evening, with the Best Actor TV Series – Drama Award for Josh O’Connor, the Best Actress TV Series – Drama Award for Emma Corrin, and the Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or TV Film Award for Gillian Anderson. One of the series’ major competitors, Steve McQueen’s BBC anthology of films Small Axe, which classified as a miniseries here, ended up getting the Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or TV Film Award for John Boyega for his role in Red, White and Blue.
