The Málaga Film Festival has selected 26 European and Latin American projects that will be taking part in the various different strands of the fifth MAFF (Málaga Festival Fund & Co Production Event), which forms part of the MAFIZ (Málaga Festival Industry Zone) industry area, set to be held from 21-25 March. This is a gathering that facilitates dialogue between producers of Latin American and European features, fosters artistic growth, international co-productions and networking, and boosts the chances of securing funding, as it brings together representatives of the main international funds in Málaga.

As part of its drive to continue evolving, and after it included Portuguese and Spanish projects at the last edition as well as creating the Social MAFF section, it is now adding MAFF Women Screen Industry for this new iteration, with the ultimate aim of achieving equality and transforming culture. This initiative came about as a result of a cooperation agreement between the Málaga Film Festival and the Andalusian Association of Women in Audiovisual Media (AAMMA), the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA) and Mujeres en VO. The chosen projects, all of which are Spanish, appear at the end of this article, as do the two projects hailing from this year’s guest country, Costa Rica.

Added to these are a number of other projects that are the result of agreements or partnerships with Sanfic Lab (Santiago International Film Festival), Cinemundi, Bolivia Lab, and the Directorate of Audiovisual, Sound Production and New Media (DAFO) at the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

The projects selected for MAFF 2022 (detailed below, three of which are Spanish) will be duking it out for the following trophies: the Bolivia Lab Award, which enables participation in the production lab set to be held in July 2022 in the city of Santa Cruz; the Cinema 226 Award, which entails consultancy on screenplays, funding, casting and the editing of a teaser; the FIDBA Award, to partake in its production tutorials and conferences in September of this year; the SANFIC de Industria (Santiago International Film Festival) Award, to take part in the production lab that will unspool in August 2022 in the Chilean capital; and the DOK Leipzig Award, to attend its co-production forum in December this year.

MAFF is organised in conjunction with Spain’s ICAA (Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute), the CAACI (Conference of Ibero-American Audiovisual and Film Institutes), IBERMEDIA, FIPCA (Federation of Ibero-American Film and Audiovisual Producers) and EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs).
