The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is the first of the major autumn events to begin revealing its line-up in full, having announced its Gala and Special Presentations on Monday, completing a few smaller previous announcements. Of the 64 titles in these sections, 35 are world premieres, with the other half mainly comprising North American premieres of films from previous top major festivals – some will have just screened at Venice or Telluride. One of the top audience-orientated festivals in the world, it still has a robust industry presence; this year, it will finally launch TIFF: The Market, taking place at the city’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre, which is set to include 150 major international sales, promotion and distribution companies (see the news). The festival dates this year are 10-20 September, with the market running from 10-16 September.

The opening-night Gala Presentation is Sîan Heder’s Being Heumann, an Apple TV production starring Mark Ruffalo, which follows up the director’s Best Picture Oscar win for CODA. The closing film is Yan Lanouette Turgeon’s biographical drama Villeneuve: Rise of a Legend, on the titular Canadian racing driver. Beyond these bookends, there is perhaps a dearth of high-profile world premieres, although some of the most exciting auteur titles of the September festivals, such as Lee Chang-Dong’s Possible Love and Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care, had their first confirmations in the announcement, suggesting they’ll definitely be seen at Venice in the former’s case (with its North American premiere status) and possibly in the latter’s (which is listed as a Canadian premiere).

Of the European world premieres in Gala Presentations, two of the standouts are Anton Corbijn’s comeback flick A Talent for Murder, with Helen Mirren playing the great author Patricia Highsmith; and Susanna White’s Prima Facie with Cynthia Erivo, an adaptation of Suzie Miller’s one-woman West End stage sensation. Amongst the Special Presentations, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo sees Takashi Miike continuing his co-production collaboration with the great British producer Jeremy Thomas, remaking Abel Ferrara’s classic crime film for the second time after Werner Herzog’s memorable version. Also in the section is Michaël R Roskam’s Le Faux Soir, the story of the Belgian Resistance in World War II producing a spoof version of the occupied country’s leading propaganda newspaper. British stalwart independent Paul Andrew Williams returns, only a year after his impressive Dragonfly, with Faith, a supernatural drama featuring Adolescence’s Erin Doherty and James McAvoy.

From Cannes, the top prize winners Fjörd, Minotaur and La bola negra will get another key close-up, alongside other highlights from this year’s edition, such as The Unknown, Gentle Monster and The Beloved. With it recently being announced to open Venice (see the news), Danny Boyle’s Ink is on call for its third major showing in quick succession, after Telluride, and Simon Stone’s buzzy Elsinore should prove a spiritual follow-up to last year’s People’s Choice winner Hamnet, with its plum role for Andrew Scott as actor Ian Charleson, who gave legendary performances as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre as he battled AIDS.
