The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) today unveiled the full 54 titles from its Centrepiece line-up and 11 features from Wavelengths, adding to the announcement last Thursday of ten series in its Primetime strand. Spotlighted by the long-awaited launch of its official market – simply known as TIFF: The Market (see the news) – the festival runs from 10-20 September for its 51st edition, its steady growth gradually making it more important for the European and international industry.

The 54 titles in Centrepiece derive from filmmakers representing 50 countries in total, among them Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, the Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria and Thailand, a fact “underscoring TIFF’s commitment to spotlighting the best in global cinema”. Twenty-two of these are world premieres, although at the time of writing, only five are listed as being European productions. One of the best-established filmmakers among this number is Indonesian director Kamila Andini, whose Four Seasons in Java is a co-production by France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, together with her home country; her previous flick Yuni won TIFF’s 2021 Platform Prize, and Before, Now & Then from 2022 bowed in the Berlinale competition. Her new work follows a woman who returns to her village after being imprisoned for the murder of a man who attempted to rape her.

Another world premiere in the section is Kim Bartley’s Irish-UK co-production Lemonade, which follows a teen just released from a care home, whose “one reckless mistake” lands him in prison; Barry Keoghan plays his former social worker, who returns to offer him guidance. Centrepiece is also where Toronto audiences can catch some of the year’s most-buzzed Cannes discoveries, such as Sandra Wollner’s Everytime, Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo’s Ben’Imana and Marine Atlan’s La Gradiva; May el-Touky’s Woman Unknown, Edoardo Gabbriellini’s The City of the Living and Muayad Alayan’s Conversation with the Sea are some of the Venice titles getting a major showcase soon after their world premieres.

Wavelengths, the festival’s dedicated section for experimental features and shorts, boasts stalwarts such as Radu Jude, Angela Schanelec and Lisandro Alonso with their latest films, and also welcomes Beatrice Gibson’s At Night and Denis Côté’s Nobody’s Violence straight from Locarno. Its two world premieres are Canadian director Yuula Benivolski’s The Black Box Is Orange and Filipino filmmaker John Torres’ The Remotes.

Finally, the Primetime strand has David Nawrath’s German entry Blindspot Berlin and the French-Canadian co-production Alice, created by Virginie Verrier and Guillaume Lonergan, as its major European titles.
