film profile] by Alicia Scherson, a four-way coproduction by Mario Mazzarotto’s Italian Movimento Film, together with Chile, Germany and Spain, will be in competition at the next Sundance Film Festival. The film will have its worldwide premiere at the prestigious American festival founded by Robert Redford and taking place each year in Salt Lake City.

Alicia Scherson, an award-winning Chilean director, who in 2005 won best director at the Tribeca Film Festival for her film Play, directed an international cast for her latest film, which included Rutger Hauer, Nicolas Vaporidis, Chilean Manuela Martelli and young Italian Luigi Ciardo (L’estate di Martino [+see also:

The Future, shot between Rome, Cologne, and Chile’s Santiago, is based on Roberto Bolaño’s last novel, “Una Novelita Lumpen,” which was written by the Chilean writer during a stay in Rome. The story follows two teenage brothers, (Martelli and Ciardo) who after unexpectedly becoming orphans, become more and more entangled in a life of crime and prostitution. They are encouraged in this by two little delinquents (Vaporidis and Giallocosta) who pretend to be their friends. An encounter with a well-known actor (Hauer) whose stardom is declining will change the course of their lives forever.

“We are especially proud of the invitation to take part in the Sundance competition,” Italian producer Mario Mazzarotto said, “The Future is an important international coproduction and the first collaboration between Italy and Chile. The film will be in Italian cinemas from March 2013, distributed by Movimento Film.” During its development phase, The Future was supported by the MEDIA programme of the European Union, as well as the Italian Ministry for Culture, the Lazio region’s Direzione Generale Cinema, and the Rome Lazio Film Commission.
