03/06/2015 - Special effects will cover the capital with water in the Danish director’s sci-fi thriller, QEDA, set in a world of environmental disaster

Credited with a series of documentaries, most recently Amateurs in Space (2015), Danish writer-director Max Kestner has started principal photography in Copenhagen for his first feature, QEDA – and by the time it meets audiences, it will feature a Danish capital that is more or less flooded. 

Scripted by Dunja Gry Jensen, the sci-fi thriller is set in 2095, in the aftermath of an environmental disaster – the oceans have overflowed, and there is no more fresh water. Copenhagen has survived, although its population lives behind tall dams, in a very harsh environment. 

Head of intelligence Fang Rung undergoes molecular fission so that one part of him can travel back to 2015-era Copenhagen to obtain a protein that can turn salt water into fresh water. Everything looks to be going fine until the contact between the two time spheres is broken.

Danish actor Carsten Bjørnlund, who received the Danish Film Academy’s Robert for Best Actor this year for his performance in the TV drama series The Legacy, will star as both parts of Fang Rung, and he will be joined by Swedish actress Sofia Helin, Marijana Jankovic and Stina Ekblad.

Extensive post-production work on special effects will cover Copenhagen with water in Birgitte Skov’s production for SF Film Production, which SF Film will release in Scandinavia. Germany’s Global Screen is handling international sales.
