16/07/2015 - A retrospective of films about terrorism, a focus on Serbian director Zelimir Zilnik and a new project targeting film professionals were announced this week by the festival’s new board of directors

The 13th edition of DocLisboa will take place between 22 October and 1 November, and part of the line-up has already been unveiled this week by the festival’s new board of directors, which includes Cíntia Gil, Davide Oberto and Tiago Afonso. As usual, the gathering will open up to the world, screening and reflecting on today’s hot topics.

Terrorism is certainly one of those subjects, and DocLisboa is pushing boundaries by organising a retrospective entitled “I don’t throw bombs, I make films” – Terrorism, Representation. The idea is not only to present films that examine terrorism, but also to show projects directed by members of army groups who have used film as a means of reflection and as a way to elucidate their ideology. Films directed by Ulrike Meinhof and Holger Meins, from Germany’s Baader-Meinhof Group, are among the titles never previously screened in Portugal.

Another retrospective will welcome Serbian director Želimir Žilnik - one of the most prominent figures of the Yugoslav Black Wave. Created over the last 50 years, his body of work depicts the disintegration and transformation of the former Yugoslavia.

Two US filmmakers will be under the spotlight in the Risks section: director and anthropologist Robert Gardner, who passed away in 2014, and experimental filmmaker Anne Charlotte Robertson.

The new board of directors has also announced a major change to the National and International Competition sections of the festival, which will no longer differentiate between short and feature titles, thereby admitting a growing number of medium-length film submissions. The Debut Competition will continue to encompass all sections of the festival.

Finally, DocLisboa 2015 will also launch the first edition of Arché, a project targeting film professionals, which includes a script and development course, a screening and discussion workshop, as well as master classes with special guests. Each edition will have a guest country, with the first one being Spain.
