October 21 will see the release in Italian cinemas of Michele Rho's Cavalli [+see also:

film profile], distributed by Lucky Red, and based on the story by Pietro Grossi.

Starring Vinicio Marchioni, Michele Alhaique and Giulia Michelini, the film is produced by Gianluca Arcopinto and Marco Ledda for Settembrini Film in collaboration with RAI Cinema and was presented at the Venice Film Festival 2011 [photo], in the italian Controcampo section.

Michele Rho's cinema debut, after his experience of theatre, takes place in the late 19th century, in a small Appenines village. In a house, which stands alone in the middle of a valley live Alessandro and Pietro, two brothers who are very different from each other, but very close. The two kids, carefree and full of energy, spend their days racing with wheelbarrows, diving into the river and stealing from the cellar. When their mother dies, the father sells her belongings to buy his sons two beautiful foals that are yet to be tamed, Baio and Sauro. Once they are adults, while Alessandro feel a growing desire to go far beyond the mountains, Pietro wants to become a horse breeder and live with Veronica, the girl he loves.

"I thought that Cavalli should tell a universal story, which transcends being located in a specific place, at a specific time," the director explained. "The elements are also archetypal: the wooden house, the border to cross, the mountain. The inseparable brotherly bond that ties the main characters throughout time becomes a metaphor for the condition of young people today - in this film, young people make difficult and important decisions, something that is increasingly difficult in today's society."
