Marco Tullio Giordana


- A man of images and words

Marco Tullio Giordana directs his first feature, To Love the Damned (o.t. Maledetti vi amerò) in 1980. The year after, he makes La caduta degli angeli ribelli (litt. 'the fall of the rebel angels'), followed, in 1982, by Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a video inspired by Benjamin Britten's music. In 1983, he shoots Notti e nebbie ('night and fog'), a TV fiction adapted from the eponymous novel by Carlo Castellaneta. In 1988, Giordana directs Appuntamento a Liverpool ('meeting in Liverpool'), followed by an episode of Especially on Sunday entitled La neve sul fuoco ('snow on the fire') in 1991. In 1994, he joins the collective project L’unico paese al mondo and in 1995, he directs Pasolini, an Italian Crime (o.t. Pasolini, un delitto italiano).

En 1996, Giordana produces and directs Scarpette bianche ('little white shoes') for RAI and UNICEF. The year after, he makes a collage movie called La rovina della patria ('the ruin of the country'). In 2000, comes The Hundred Steps (o.t. I Cento Passi), Best script at the 57th Venice Film Festival. followed by the 2003 saga in two parts, The Best of Youth (o.t. La meglio gioventù), which was in the Cannes selection and received the Un Certain Regard award.

Giordana is also a man of theatre and literature. Besides his films, Giordana staged Gaetano Donizetti's "The Elixir of Love" for the Teatro Verdi in Trieste (1990) and Enzo Siciliano's show "Morte di Galeazzo Ciano" ('the death of G.C.') for the Teatro Carignano in Torino. He also published a novel ("Vita segreta del signore delle macchine", 1990) and an essay ("Pasolini, un delitto italiano", 1994).
