Nyqvist returns to Swedish cinema for Malmros' My So-Called Father

Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist (photo), whose starring role in the Millennium trilogy (2009) "put me on the map internationally" has returned to Sweden after a string of US assignments to play the lead in Swedish director Ulf Malmros' My So-Called Father, a family drama currently shooting in Stockholm, Uddevalla and Trollhättan.

Nyqvist, who has performed in such movies as US directors Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and John Singleton's Abduction (both 2011), will be in Cannes for Swedish Bob Film producer Jan Blomgren's launch of the film, which has been scheduled for a September 19, 2014, premiere.

Scripted by Malmros, My So-Called Father follows a young women, Malin, who has nowhere to stay after her boyfriend breaks up their relationship. As a last resort she seeks out her father, whom she has never met - a self-centered and arrogant actor, Martin; but before she can tell him the reason she has come, he is hit by a stroke.

When he wakes up he does not remember who he is - and definitely not that he has met his daughter, so Malin sees her chance to make him the father she has always missed. She helps him back to life, and together they fabricate her happy childhood with him. Then his memory gradually returns.

Malmros, who most recently signed the comedies Metal Brothers (2012) and The Wedding Photographer [+see also:

(2009), has cast Swedish actress Vera Vitali as Malin and Icelandic-Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnasson as her boyfriend for the film, which Bob Film produces with among others Swedish regional film centre, Film i Väst.
