Pesaro Festival platform for experimental Italian cinema

The 49th edition of the International Festival for New Cinema in Pesaro (Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema di Pesaro) running June 24-30 is dedicated to new Chilean cinema and the vivacious Italian experimental scene. The competition will give full recognition to a mostly young set of directors presenting their debut or second films.

The festival, directed by Giovanni Spagnoletti, will have a feminine tone this year, with four women directors participating, making the event’s selection increasingly consistent in recent years. Opening the festival will be Slovakian director and screenwriter Mira Fornay who will be presenting My Dog Killer [+see also:

, which has already received an award in Rotterdam. From Romania, documentary filmmaker Alexandra Gulea will be presenting her first feature film Matei Child Minder, set in a mining area. Halley, directed by Mexican Sebastián Hoffman will feature, as will Kayan, the directing debut by Maryam Najafi, whose heritage is Iranian. Italy is being represented this year by two films, Stefano Tummolini’s second film, L’estate sta finendo, and Fabiana Sargentini’s debut Non lo so ancora [+see also:

, starring Donatella Finocchiaro and Giulio Brogi. The last film in competition is from this edition’s focus country Chile: La chupilca del diablo by Ignacio Rodríguez.

A special event, overseen by Adriano Aprà, will concentrate on Italian production from the new millennium, with fiction films, documentaries, animation films, experimental films, shorts, mediums and features, for cinema or video, which are aiming to position themselves outside of traditional genres. Like the incursion into mental institutions through photographic portraits by Giovanni Baresi with Identità (non più) nascoste, Danilo Torre’s disturbing mesh-up in Magic Fantasy Light, a journey into an abandoned area, the emblem of an unredeemed south by Antonello Matarazzo with Miserere, the study of natural space between scientific work and lyrical abstraction by Mirco Santi in Lido and a scholarly and cross-media project by Andrea Caccia in Vedozero [+see also:

. Two pieces of work take the form of intimate diaries for their directors: J’attends une femme by Chiara Malta, a kind of video-letter to her daughter, made with archival material, and Home by Virginia Eleuteri Serpieri who uses cinema to relive her own memories. Animation films, whether traditional or digital, will also feature, including La Piccola Russia by Gianluigi Toccafondo, La memoria dei cani by Simone Massi, Percorso #0008-0209 by Igor Imhoff and Corpus No.Body by the Basmati collective.
