Italians on Croisette

Il cuore altrove by Pupi Avati was the sole Italian film selected for the official competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Two first-films: L’isola by Costanza Quatriglio and Il Cormorano by Edoardo Gabbriellini were selected for, respectively, Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week. Marco Tullio Giordana’s five-hour TV film entitled La meglio gioventù scored with the selectors of the prestigious Un Certain Regard competition. Thus Italy will be well-represented in every section of France’s premiere film event.
Cannes will also remember some of Italy’s great filmmakers of the past with a restrospective of Fellini’s entire body of work, and tributes to Pier Paolo Pasolini and Alberto Lattuada. The Critics’ Week programme also includes a short films by Ila Bêka (In utero) while two shorts by Nanni Moretti: Il grido d’angoscia dell’uccello predatore and L’ultimo cliente will screen in Special Sessions.
Three Italian co-productions were also chosen: Alexandre Sokurov’s Father and Son, Crimson Gold by Alexandre Sokurov and The Moab Story by Peter Greenaway – both of which were produced by Mikado Film, with the latter also coproduced by Gam Film.
