Munich rewards tolerance

by

The 21st edition of the Munich Film Festival consolidated its long-standing reputation for excellence and the variety of its awards and events with the presentation of the Bernhard Wicki – -"Die Brücke" (The Bridge) award presented by the foundation that bears the name of the German actor and director who died in 2000. The prize includes a cheque for Euros25,000 and traditionally goes to a filmmaker whose work encourages tolerance. This year's winner is Marceline Loridan-Ivens for Birkenau und Rosenfeld and also the star of the film, Anouk Aimée. Loridan-Ivens is the widow of the world famous documentary maker, Joris Ivens.
Produced by FFF-Bayern and first presented at the 2003 Berlinale in the Special Events section, Birkenau und Rosenfeld is based on Loridan-Ivens’ imprisonment in Auschwitz-Birkenau, aged just 15. The film is about a woman who returns to the concentration camp where she was a prisoner during the war, and her meeting with a young photographer whose grandfather was an SS guard at that very camp.
