- France salutes the `baddie´ of Federico Fellini´s Cabiria and 'Heurtebise' of Jean Cocteau's Orpheus. Dead at 82

The death was announced today of veteran French actor, François Périer. Although Périer, who died last Friday at the age of 82, will not be familiar to many filmgoers, he starred in 108 films and around 80 stage plays. He was discovered by Jean-Paul Sartre who cast Périer as Hugo in The Dirty Hands. The actor went on to work with some of the greatest names in European film: Marcel Carné, Christian Jacques, Julien Duvivier, René Clément and Jean-Pierre Melville.
In 1950 Jean Cocteau offered Périer the chance of a lifetime when he cast him in the ground-breaking role of Heurtebise and audiences will surely remember seeing Périer excel as the «baddie» in Fellini´s Le notti di Cabiria.
