Pintilie: A prophet at home
Master Romanian filmmaker Lucian Pintilie will be presented with a Career Award during the ceremony of the Gopo Awards, the country’s top film honours.
A native of Bucharest, Pintilie moved to Paris in 1972 to escape Ceausescu’s regime after his theatre play Revizor and his film Reconstruction (1969) were banned. An Unforgettable Summer and Next Stop Paradise would later win him acclaim throughout Europe.
Upon returning to his homeland, the director made The Oak (1992), The Afternoon of a Torturer (2001) and Niki and Flo (2003).
The Gopos, named after renowned animation director Ion Popescu-Gopo, will be held for the first time and broadcast on national Romanian television. Nominees include two award-winning Cannes titles from last year: How I Spent the End of the World [+see also:
