Norwegian cinema gets "animated"

by

The Norwegian animation film industry is expanding with three features currently either on release, in production or post-production. The total cost of the three features was Nkr 130 million (Euros 17.7 million), Nkr 40 million of which (Euros5.4million) came from the Norwegian state fund. Karlsson pa taket (Karlsson on the Roof), the most expensive of the three is already on general release. This film ended up costing Nkr 58 milion (Euros 7.9million), almost four times the initial estimate of Nkr 15million (Euros2million), with Nkr 15 million (Euros 2million) provided by Norway’s public coffers and the rest from various institutions in Norway and Sweden.
Kaptein Sabeltann is scheduled to go into production with a budget of Nkr 41.5 million (Euros 5.6million). All conceptual work and design will be carried out in Norway with the rest of the film being made in other countries in order to contain costs.Kaptein Sabeltann is scheduled for a December 2003 release.
Slipp Jimmy fri (Free Jimmy) will be made entirely in DV (datamaskiner), cost around Dkr 30million (Euros4 million)- since digital technology comes cheaper than traditional animation techniques- and furthermore, the public will be able to download this film onto their PCs. Slipp Jimmy fri should be ready for August 2003.
