(lit. “Grey and Black”) is competing at the World Film Festival. The Montreal-based gathering opens its 40th edition tonight, unspooling until 7 September.

Shot in the last quarter of 2014 in Lisbon and the Azores, Cinzento e Negro tells the story of David (Miguel Borges), who steals a lot of money from an old man and escapes to the Azores, where he begins a new life and falls in love with a lonesome local woman named Marina (Mónica Calle). But no crime goes without punishment, and the couple will soon be chased by a former colleague of David’s, Maria (Joana Bárcia), and a policeman, Lucas (Filipe Duarte), who wish to recover the stolen money and keep it for themselves.

Production company Fado Filmes, owned by Luís Galvão Teles, is fairly concise when it comes to describing the plot, announcing it as a “volcanic story of betrayal, theft, escape, chase and revenge, love, loneliness and death; a Greek tragedy in the setting of a western”.

Cinzento e Negro is Rocha’s first effort since The Other Side [+leggi anche:

, which also earned Filipe Duarte the Best Actor Award at the Montreal Film Festival in 2007. The film will also have its Portuguese premiere in the Azores in September. The date for the local theatrical release has not yet been announced.

. The movie, which opened the latest edition of IndieLisboa, became the most-seen Portuguese film of the first half of 2015. Starring Gonçalo Waddington, David Chan Cordeiro, Miguel Guilherme and José Pinto, this Individeos production is a satire of superhero movies set against the backdrop of the Salazar dictatorship (read more).
