The Kreutzer Sonata to screen in London

by

London's Barbican Centre will host the UK premiere of Gustav Machatý’s The Kreutzer Sonata on February 28. The 1927 film is an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's story of tale of a man driven to rage and revenge when he hears his pianist wife and her lover playing Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata.

Tolstoy's story has been adapted to film many times, including recently Maurizio Sciarra's 2006 film The Kreutzer Sonata: What is Love? and Bernard Rose's 2008 film The Kreutzer Sonata.

Machatý was a key figure in the early history of Czechoslovak film. He is best known today for his film Ecstasy, which screened in competition in Venice in 1934.

The Sunday performance of The Kreutzer Sonata will feature live accompaniment by Czech musicians, percussionist Pavel Fajt and pianist Peter Graham.

The screening is part of the Barbican's Silent Film & Live Music Series.
