Cineuropa: Could you introduce the project The Mountain Bride? What story does it tell?
Santiago Fondevila Sancet: The Mountain Bride takes place at the end of World War II, in a small village high up in the Italian Dolomites. It’s the story of how the lives of a teacher’s family change forever with the arrival of a fugitive soldier. The story is told from the three daughters' point of view, showing their metamorphosis as they are forced to grow up following their encounter with the deserter. The war is always in the background, and the movie focuses on all the people — the elderly, children and women — who didn’t go to the front but were still affected by the war.

Why did you get involved with this project?
We decided to get involved when Maura told us about her idea based on real events from her life. We had complete trust in her talent since her last fiction film (Maternal) and her previous documentaries. Maura works in close contact with stories that are emotional, cinematic and rooted in her biographical experiences, and we think there is something magnetic and special about her approach to cinema.

Is this project in line with the company's editorial line?
Totally, we believe that the main objective of Cinedora is to produce entertainment and art projects that are inclusive, disruptive, and conscious of the world we live in. We develop projects aimed at an international audience, in line with the open, horizontal culture that we promote at Cinedora and that we seek in our collaborations. At this moment, we are developing a high concept, sci-fi suspense drama set in the near future, an epic adaptation of a popular Italian novel, a few concepts for series, and a sports documentary, following a simple motto: cinema will always survive… in the end, video didn’t kill the radio star!

When is the shooting scheduled for?
The project will be shot mainly in La Val di Sole in Trentino (North of Italy), Alto Adige and a southern Italian region to be confirmed. Post-production will take place mostly in France, supervised by our partner co-producer Charades. Because the story covers four seasons, we will be shooting both in summer and late autumn 2023.
