Produced by Marina Marzotto and Mattia Oddone on behalf of Propaganda Italia, and co-produced by Joseph Rouschop of Belgian group GapBusters, Flowing applies the codes of the thriller/horror genre to a family drama, exploring an increasingly hateful modern-day society wrestling with ever greater pressures: “The Rome we see in Flowing is continually on the point of imploding, and it’s not too far removed from real-life”, offers Strippoli, whose first feature film A Classic Horror Story [+see also:

), is soon to be released. “We only need to find ourselves queueing at the supermarket or at the post office, stuck in traffic on the city ring road or squeezed into a crowded bus to feel the anger rising up between people. It’s the same anger which feeds into the worst of modern-day politics, which gives rise to the vilest outbursts on social media and which makes us all increasingly individualistic”.

Written by Jacopo del Giudice (a former pupil of Rome’s Experimental Film Centre, who graduated in 1991), Flowing’s screenplay triumphed at the 32nd edition of the Franco Solinas Prize (“An emotional horror film without precedent in our country. A story as extreme as the madness it explores”, explained the jury). Uruguayan author Gustavo Hernàndez and the director himself also contributed towards the writing of the script.

The film’s photography is likewise entrusted to a young talent: 31-year-old Cristiano Di Nicola. Set design and costumes, meanwhile, come courtesy of two pairs of expert hands: Nello Giorgetti (who has previously worked with Sergio Leone, Luciano Salce, Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci and Giuseppe Tornatore) and Nicoletta Taranta, respectively.

“We’re continuing on our path, believing in stories and in Italian talent, seeking out a form of cinema which is markedly local, but also universal”, the film’s producer Marina Marzotto enthuses; “for this reason, our films are born out of a desire to find a place in international markets, to search for common languages (genre) and to showcase unique and distinctive directorial approaches”.

For the record, works previously co-produced by Belgian firm GapBusters in Italy include Romulus & Remus – The First King [+see also:
