Tanel Toom’s new feature Sentinel wraps filming in Tallinn
- The Estonian helmer’s sci-fi thriller will star Kate Bosworth, Lucien Laviscount, Martin McCann and Thomas Kretschmann in the lead roles
Director Tanel Toom has wrapped filming in Tallinn on his latest project, Sentinel. An alumnus of Tallinn University’s Baltic Film and Media School and Beaconsfield’s National Film and Television School, the Estonian filmmaker has worked on several successful shorts, including his 2010 hit The Confession (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film), and later helmed his debut feature, the 2019 epic drama Truth and Justice [+see also:

The story of Sentinel, penned by Malachi Smyth (The Score, Nocturne), is set on a remote military base on the shores of a vast ocean, where two soldiers are waiting for their two-year shift to end. When there is a delay and the long-awaited exchange ship arrives empty, the tension between them starts to mount, and the situation spirals out of control.
The film’s cast includes Kate Bosworth (Wild Indian), Lucien Laviscount (the Netflix series Emily in Paris), Martin McCann (Wolf) and Thomas Kretschmann (the Netflix series Biohackers [+see also:

Speaking about his project, Toom said: “It was a great honour to work with such great actors as Kate, Lucien, Martin and Thomas. I have carried this film with me for a long time, and I'm so glad that, finally, the moment to bring it to the people is so near.”
An Estonian-German-British co-production, Sentinel is being staged by Allfilm (Estonia), Sentinel Entertainment (UK) and Kick Film (Germany), in co-operation with CrossDay Productions (UK), Stigma Films (UK), Tallifornia (Estonia) and Ichiban Films (Estonia). The project’s producers are Ivo Felt, Ben Pullen, Jörg Bundschuh, Pippa Cross and Matthew James Wilkinson. Backers include the Estonian Film Institute, the Estonian Cultural Endowment, Film Estonia, FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, the Bavarian Bank Fund and the Deutscher Filmförderfonds. Altitude Film Sales is handling its world sales and will introduce the project to potential buyers at the American Film Market next week.
