The Berlinale announces the first batch of Panorama and Forum titles

The Berlinale has started rolling out the announcements for its 74th edition (15-25 February) with a selection of titles set to screen in the Panorama and Forum sections.

The first batch of Panorama entries includes 11 films, seven of which will have their world premieres at the festival. Among them, Turkish-German director Aslı Özge returns to the section where she premiered her earlier films All of a Sudden [+see also:

, a sci-fi drama about a woman who struggles after her brother disappeared during a space mission, until she is contacted by an unidentified life form (see the news).

, Swiss directorial duo Carmen Jaquier and Jan Gassmann tell the story of an anti-heroine who cuts the cord in radical fashion, fleeing from her newborn baby and purported domestic bliss to an unknown city in the Mediterranean.

, in which Saoirse Ronan plays a woman who attempts to come to terms with her troubled past, returning from London to her home on the Orkney Islands in Scotland.

Meanwhile, in Forum, which is now headed by Barbara Wurm, of the eight announced titles, three are biopics. The synopsis-length title of Abdenour Zahzah’s True Chronicles of the Blida Joinville Psychiatric Hospital in the Last Century, when Dr Frantz Fanon Was Head of the Fifth Ward between 1953 and 1956 [+see also:

is self-explanatory, while the life and work of Austrian painter Maria Lassnig are portrayed by Anja Salomonowitz in Sleeping with a Tiger [+see also:

 depicts the career of Marija Leiko, an actress less well known abroad who became a victim of the totalitarian regime in 1930s Moscow, like so many other artists of the time (see the news).

Finally, the 2024 Forum Special will be dedicated to questions of relations and resistance from a feminist perspective, and will include, among other titles, a new documentary by a living legend of Georgian cinema 93-year-old Lana Gogoberidze, Mother and Daughter, or the Night Is Never Complete [+see also:

, in which she remembers her mother Nutsa, Georgia’s first female director.
