The film—based on the novel of the same name written by the director herself—tells the story of Juan and Gloria (played by Darío Grandinetti and Adriana Ozores), who have been divorced and estranged for 20 years. They must travel from Buenos Aires to Spain upon receiving the news that Kim, their daughter with whom they lost contact long ago, has been found dead. Upon arrival, they discover that she has left behind a grandson whose whereabouts are unknown—a revelation that prompts them to remain in Spain to find him.
Set along the Mediterranean coast, with the city of Benidorm and surrounding villages as a backdrop, the film contrasts the protagonists' shared loneliness with a festive and sunny environment. "As in my other films, the characters are the driving force behind the story. It’s not only a thriller, but also an emotional investigation, into what kind of bond remains after a couple separates and a family falls apart. Starting from adverse conditions, the central characters must find the will to move ahead, not as superheroes, in the most unlikely of settings: the quintessential holiday town in the heart of the Mediterranean. My aim is to convey truth and to invite viewers to accompany the characters through both conflict and reconciliation, to want to uncover what happened, the details of the crime, the police investigation, and the suspense, and at the same time to understand the how and why: the personal journeys of Juan and Gloria," said the Madrid-born filmmaker.
Después de Kim is a co-production between Después de Kim AIE, Pedro Pastor for Voramar Films and Gerardo Herrero and Mariela Besuievski for Tornasol Media. With the participation of RTVE, A Punt, ICAA and the IVC of the Valencian Government. Its international sales are managed by Latido Films and it will be distributed in Spanish cinemas by Karma Films.
