16/04/2026 - The Bosnian helmer returns to Srebrenica with a sequel to her Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated movie, set for delivery in spring 2027 and repped internationally by Indie Sales

Paris-based firm Indie Sales has boarded Quo Vadis, Aida? – The Missing Part, the much-anticipated follow-up to Jasmila Žbanić’s Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Quo Vadis, Aida?. The company will launch international sales on the project at the upcoming Cannes Marché du Film, as production is currently under way in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Set in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Srebrenica in 1995, the film continues the story of Aida, who receives information suggesting that her sons – taken by Serbian forces – may still be alive and held in a camp. Driven by this fragile hope, she embarks on a desperate search within a refugee centre teeming with thousands of displaced women. As uncertainty deepens and institutional support proves absent, the women are forced to confront a political system shaped by compromise and impunity. Under Aida’s leadership, they begin organising resistance in the face of systemic injustice.

Jasna Đuričić reprises her European Film Award-winning role as Aida, this time in an English-language performance. She is joined by an international ensemble cast including Simon McBurney (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), Arieh Worthalter (The Goldman Case) and Dmitrij Schaad (Killing Eve), alongside regional talent.

Žbanić’s original film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, and went on to win the European Film Awards for Best Film and Best Director, as well as securing an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature and two BAFTA nods. Furthermore, it was presented with the LUX Audience Award in 2022 (see the news). The filmmaker first gained international recognition with Grbavica, which won the Golden Bear at the 2006 Berlinale. More recently, she directed an episode of the HBO series The Last of Us and presented her TV project I Know Your Soul at Venice in 2023.

According to Nicolas Eschbach, CEO and co-founder of Indie Sales and Indie Prod, the sequel “builds on Jasmila Žbanić’s acclaimed work with a remarkable focus on sisterhood and an unflinching pursuit of justice”, describing it as “an intimate yet globally resonant story” that feels “more necessary than ever”.

The film is being produced by Deblokada (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and co-produced by a wide network of European partners, including Nikolaus Geyrhalter Filmproduktion (Austria), Topkapi (Netherlands), Razor Film (Germany), Madants (Poland), Indie Prod (France), Woodz (Croatia), Plattform (Sweden) and Artikulacija (Montenegro).

Moreover, Quo Vadis, Aida? – The Missing Part has secured substantial backing from major European and international institutions, among them Eurimages, the Austrian Film Institute, the Netherlands Film Fund, the German Federal Film Board, the Polish Film Institute, Aide aux Cinémas du Monde, the CNC, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Swedish Film Institute and Film i Väst, alongside broadcasters and partners including ZDF/ARTE, Canal+/Ciné+, ORF and TRT.

Delivery is expected in spring 2027.
