Written by Sylvie Gautier, the story revolves around 34-year-old Karine who only has one man in her life: Ziggy, her 17-year-old son, who is now a trainee pastry chef. They’ve been through a lot together and have earned the right to be happy. Karine works nights in the company of her colleagues who are cleaning operatives, like her, for a small cleaning company. But the latter is taken over and the boss replaced, sending shockwaves throughout the tight-knit group. A minor accident sees Karine accepting a level of responsibility which is beyond her skillset and reveals her deepest flaws: illiterate, she hides behind her son, but this secret keeps both of them trapped in a mutual dependency which is close to breaking point. Social pressure forces Karine against the ropes, obliging her to reveal her true self in order to defend others. A heroine is born…

Produced by Stéphanie Douet on behalf of Sensito Films, Bright Women has been pre-purchased by Ciné+ and TV5 Monde, and enjoys support from France’s Sud region, as well as the commune of Martigues. The five-week film shoot unfolded in two stages, in December and January, with Yoan Cart heading up photography. Distribution in France will be steered by Alba Films.

For the record, Sensito Films is soon to wrap filming on Toi non plus t'as rien vu by Béatrice Pollet (read our article).
