ficha de la película] leads the nominations for the 2023 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). It has picked up nods for Best Director, Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Not in the English Language. The German-US-UK co-production, which debuted on Netflix after premiering at Toronto in 2022, is the most-nominated single film at the BAFTAs since 2011’s The King’s Speech [+lee también:

ficha de la película] and – with 14 nominations – it ties with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the most-lauded film in a foreign language in BAFTA’s history.

Speaking about the nominations, Berger said: “We are speechless and overwhelmed. It’s an enormous honour to be acknowledged by the British Film Academy. That the film has resonated with so many people is a testament to Erich Maria Remarque’s extraordinary book, written 100 years ago and yet, sadly, still relevant today. It was our north star. The novel’s powerful anti-war message unites us, no matter which country we live in. We are indebted to our incredible creative team – each person was an integral part of the whole and turned the film into what it is now. Thank you so much, BAFTA. We are deeply humbled.”

The movie is also part of a good year for Netflix, which is the leading distributor in terms of the 2023 BAFTA nominees, with other titles from their catalogue receiving nods. These include The Wonder [+lee también:

Other lauded titles included Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy-drama The Banshees of Inisherin [+lee también:

ficha de la película] and the rip-roaring genre piece Everything Everywhere All at Once by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, both of which clocked in at ten nominations. Bas Luhrmann’s Elvis follows just behind them with nine nods. Surprise omissions included Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, which ended up with only one nomination (for Best Original Screenplay).

While there has been some dismay that only one out of the six nominees for Best Director is female (specifically Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King), there has been delight at the fact that Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer is an all-woman affair.

The nominees will now be voted on by BAFTA’s 7,500-strong membership. This is aside from the Rising Star Award, which will grant the public the chance to have their say.

The winners will be announced at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony held on Sunday 19 February at London’s Royal Festival Hall. It will mark the first time that actor Richard E Grant has hosted the gala.
