Led by Angela Schanelec (supported by Fabienne Aguado, Annabel Brady-Brown, Hassen Ferhani and Haden Guest), the international competition jury of the 34th Marseille International Film Festival – FIDMarseille has handed its Grand Prize to Background [+lee también:

by Khaled Abdulwahed. This second feature-length documentary by the filmmaker who has been a refugee in Germany for several years now, is highly creative in terms of its form and investigates the preserve of memory while following in the faint tracks of the director’s father, who was a Syrian student in the German Democratic Republic in the ‘50s.

The International Georges de Beauregard Prize, for its part, went to The Mariner by Japan’s Yohei Yamakado, which is produced by Portugal and France, and which follows a young woman who closes her eyes. From within the darkness on screen and in the black of the night, she recites O Marinheiro by Fernando Pessoa. Dreams replace reality in the frightening expectation of sunrise…

In terms of the French competition (whose jury was steered by Yann Gonzalez), victory was won by the medium-length film In Silence and Clamors by Clément Roussier and Hadrien Mossaz, and a Special Mention was awarded to Damien Manivel’s The Island [+lee también:

(which also triumphed in the Ciné+ competition). The National Georges de Beauregard Prize winged its way to Mathilde Girard’s The Night Drags On, while the first films competition saw Brazil’s Pedro Geraldo reign supreme with Sofia Was.

Awards coming courtesy of the international co-production platform FIDLab were also announced, with European projects by lrati Gorostidi Agirretxe, Ann Oren, Julien Ticot-Guillet, Gregor Božič, Beatrice Gibson and Salomé Lamas all singled out for trophies.
