Two weeks after the Golden Globes were handed out (read news), the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards confirmed some of the takes prompted by the newly revamped awards given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including the love for one of the two main winners, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin [+lire aussi :

fiche film], which had already been nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, managed to get the same amount of love. And even more surprisingly, Ruben Östlund’s second Palme d’Or winner, Triangle of Sadness [+lire aussi :

fiche film], got nominations in the three main categories, making this a banner year for European cinema.

In this situation, The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet on the Western Front grabbed nine nominations, both including Best Picture and Best Screenplay categories, although the former (with a nod in the Best Director category and no less than four in the acting categories for Volpi Cup winner Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon) seems better positioned than the latter (which excelled in the technical categories, besides Best International Feature Film). Only the US title Everything Everywhere All at Once, vying for a whopping total of 11 awards, outpaces both European candidates.

The other main European hopeful, Triangle of Sadness, has already got reason to celebrate, since the three nominations received are in the main categories (Best Picture, Director and Screenplay), a massive feat for a film produced in continental Europe.

As for the Best International Feature Film category, the European presence is bigger than expected. Alongside All Quiet on the Western Front, three other submissions have made the cut: Belgium’s Close [+lire aussi :
