Objeto de estudio, a film by artist Raúl Alaejos, has been awarded the Jury Award (which includes a cash prize of €1,500) at the closing gala of the sixth edition of MajorDocs – Mallorca Documentary Film Festival, held between October 1 and 5 on the Balearic island.

The competition’s jury, made up of the artist Marta Azparren, the filmmaker Macià Florit and the artistic director of FIPADOC Christine Camdessus, wanted to highlight that “in a festival that this year has focused on the relationship between those who film and those who are filmed, Objeto de estudio builds authorship through the characters and the landscape in a collective creation process. Characters that, as objects of study, end up imposing themselves over the director's intentions; the humility of accepting that reality is stronger than his ideas and his own gaze.”

, by Canarian filmmaker Macu Machín, which brings us closer to the reunion of three sisters in La Palma to share a family inheritance; a situation that is already conflictive enough without adding that the land they are arguing over may end up buried by the island's volcano. As the verdict states, “with a skill for sharing the unspoken, and constructed as a classic tragedy, the film manages to capture an intimate cinema in a documentary.”

, directed by David Mikulán and Bálint Réves, as the best film of the festival. This feature film could wear the coming-of-age label if the genre would admit the crudeness with which it explains the entry into adulthood of Sanyi, initially just another kid walking down a street in Budapest, who ends up becoming a young man without hope. The award includes IB3 acquiring the rights to broadcast on regional television.

New to this sixth edition is the addition the Balearic short films section. Nine works have been evaluated by a jury including the filmmaker Marta Hierro, the director of Menorcadoc Cristian P. Coll and the director of Ibizacinefest Xavi Herrero. The jury chose Charlie, últimas palabras, by Anthony Neitzke, as the best title, because they considered it as “a hard and at the same time tender portrait about ageing”, as stated in their minutes. They also decided to award a special mention to Valeria, Gerard, Gery by José Aragón.

The award for the best pitch in the professional section of the festival, sponsored by the DOCMA association, went to The Path that Walks (Nar'hi enan) by Efthymia Zymvragaki, with special mentions for the projects Level by Anna Berkhof and Carlos Mora, and Como dos extrañas by Carolina Astudillo.

Some 3,000 people attended the different sessions in the festival, 50% more than in the previous year. In addition, more than 1,000 students took part in the Educa programme and the Comunitats programme had twice as many participants as in 2023. Also, more than twenty Balearic, national and international professionals have taken part in the sixth edition of MajorDocs, providing master classes and talks, and who have also participated in different discussions and round tables.
