Filming has wrapped in Madrid on Cómo volé sobre el nido del cuco, the new film directed by Salvador Calvo, winner of the Goya Award for Best Director for Adú and recently behind the action feature film To The Max). The film is an adaptation of Ana Delgado’s bestselling book of the same name, published under the pseudonym Sydney Bristow: an autobiographical work that chronicles the author’s experiences. It is a first-person account of mental health that highlights the importance of seeking help and allowing oneself to be helped.
The screenplay is written by Alejandro Hernández, Goya winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for Todas las mujeres and Calvo’s collaborator on all his feature films. It follows the story of Ana, a 30-year-old woman convinced she can handle everything... until she can’t. After hitting rock bottom and attempting suicide, she is forcibly admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where she spends 37 days alongside a group of strangers who force her to confront herself.
The cast is led by Marina Salas (recently seen in También esto pasará and the series I, Addict and La ruta), Daniel Ibáñez (Goya nominee for Best New Actor for Saturn Return), Carmen Ruiz (currently in the series Animal and Si es martes, es asesinato), Josean Bengoetxea (recently in La buena suerte and the series Legado), Raúl Prieto (Hidden Murder), Pilar Gómez (the series Yakarta and Poquita fe) and Carlos González (the series Mariliendre). Special guest appearances include Pedro Casablanc (recently in the series Querer and Goya nominee for B, la película), Alicia Borrachero (the series The Asunta Case), Sonia Almarcha (Goya nominee for The Good Boss), Claudia Roset (the series Rage) and Ignacio Mateos (Unbridled).
“I’m currently working on the post-production of one of the most exciting films I’ve ever made,” explains Salvador Calvo. “It’s fascinating because of its subject matter: the true story of Ana Delgado, who speaks in the first person about mental health – a courageous and compelling account that tackles an issue that affects us all, directly or indirectly. Anorexia, bulimia, suicide… addressed without taboos, yet with a hopeful outlook. A film without frills, appealing to the very essence of dramatic art: a strong script and great actors. Portraying Ana’s mental journey was a real challenge, and Marina Salas delivers a masterfully performance, bringing to life a complex character with a thousand facets. My aim has been to create a story that the viewer will watch with a smile on their face… and at times, with a lump in their throat that is impossible to shake off,” he continues.
Cómo volé sobre el nido del cuco is produced by Carla Pérez de Albéniz for Fonte Films, Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano for Atresmedia Cine, Luis Ferrón for LAZONA and Cómo Volé AIE, with the participation of Atresmedia and Netflix, and funding from the ICAA, the Community of Madrid and Madrid City Council. LAZONA Pictures will distribute the film in Spanish cinemas, while Film Factory will handle international sales.
