Home sounds environmental alarm across world

"To distribute the film on a maximum number of supports and as freely as possible": such was the aim of photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand in his first directorial foray.

This dream has become a reality, for his environmental documentary, Home [+see also:

, will be launched theatrically tomorrow in 126 countries, on 65 television networks, on Internet and DVD. The feature, composed exclusively of aerial images shot in 54 countries, is narrated by Jacques Gamblin, Salma Hayek and Glenn Close in the French, Spanish and English-language versions, respectively.

Organised to coincide with World Environment Day, this large-scale simultaneous release is all the more remarkable as the film is rights-free: movie theatre admission prices will be reduced and will cover screening costs alone, video supports have been sold at cost price and the title will be shown free of charge on the Internet. Home will also be screened tomorrow in Paris (in the open air on the Champs de Mars), New York (Central Park), Boston (Institute of Contemporary Art), London, Barcelona, Athens, Mexico, Damascus and Montreal.

"Our impact on the Earth is greater than it can bear: we consume too much and are in the process of depleting all its resources. From the sky, we can clearly see the places where the Earth is damaged." Hoping to raise awareness of the necessity of changing our modes of consumption by showing greater respect for the environment, Arthus-Bertrand points out that humankind has barely 10 years left to curb a destructive process on its way to becoming totally irreversible.

This environmental message is conveyed through a cinematic travel journal, where, according to producer and co-screenwriter Denis Carot, "every shot takes your breath away".

Produced by Luc Besson for EuropaCorp (who are also releasing the film domestically on 200 screens) and Carot for Elzévir Films, Home was made for €11.56m. This included co-production support from France 2 Cinéma (with a TV broadcast scheduled for tomorrow evening) and €10m in backing from the PPR group.
