(Portugal), plus the new outing by idiosyncratic US auteur James Benning, The United States of America.

Finally, the Berlinale's most artistic and formally challenging section, Forum Expanded, which is now headed by the newly appointed Ala Younis and Ulrich Ziemons, presents five films, including Lydia Nash's vs (Austria), Mawena Yehouessi's Sol in the Dark (France) and James Gregory Atkinson's Jail Bird in a Peacock Chair (Germany/USA), plus ten installations from four continents, six of which have been produced or co-produced in Europe.

“The pandemic has created distances – not only between people, but also in the way we see the world. Amongst the 2022 selection are films shot during the pandemic, reflecting on how it feels to be disconnected from others. It is with this first batch of films that we want to highlight the power of cinema as a tool that connects people, places and the times ahead,” says the Artistic Director of the Berlinale, Carlo Chatrian.
