A total of 22 titles (13 features, seven shorts, one medium-length film and one audiovisual performance) will form part of the line-up of the ever-surprising and risk-taking Zabaltegi-Tabakalera strand of the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival (18-26 September).

The section will bring together directors with a special connection to the festival, such as Argentinians María Alché (Horizontes Award in 2018 with A Family Submerged) and Benjamín Naishtat (Silver Shell for Best Director that same year for Rojo), who will open it with the world premiere of Pedro in the Land, and Isaki Lacuesta (the proud holder of two Golden Shells), who will close it with the world premiere of the documentary Flamenco Sketches, as well as other filmmakers returning to the event, such as Jane Schoenbrun (with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) and Angelica Ruffier (with La Belle Année).

The selection also includes established auteurs such as Radu Jude (the director of Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlinale), who has co-directed the short Shot Reverse Shot with Adrian Cioflâncă; and, as already announced, Malaysian filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang, with the film shot in San Sebastián Dust, following its screening at Venice, and French director Bruno Dumont, with Red Rocks, which premiered in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

Among the other selections are Italian-Austrian duo Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, who will bring along their new docufiction The Loneliest Man in Town, which premiered in competition at the Berlinale; and Swiss filmmaker Tobias Nölle and Parisian doctor Loran Bonnardot, who will compete with Tristan Forever, unveiled in the Berlinale Panorama, which offers a look at the world’s most remote inhabited island, Tristan da Cunha, to which the doctor travels with no intention of returning. The programme also includes a performance that Argentinian artist Albertina Carri will present out of competition.

These titles join those listed at the end of this piece and the other Spanish productions announced a few weeks ago: HAMALAU gau (CATORCE noches) by Navarrese helmer Oskar Alegria Suescun, a world premiere; and Far from the Trees, with which Meritxell Colell Aparicio recently won the FIPRESCI Award and the Boccalino d’Oro for Best Film at Locarno.

Meanwhile, the Horizontes Latinos section will boast a dozen titles, including the world premiere of The French Teacher (Brazil/France/Portugal), directed by Brazilian filmmaker Ricardo Alves Jr, while the Belgian-French-Mexican co-production Forever Your Maternal Animal by Costa Rican director Valentina Maurel will open this strand. Rounding off the programme are features selected for and rewarded at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Locarno, produced wholly or partly in Latin America, directed by filmmakers of Latin origin or set within Latin communities, which will vie for the Horizontes Make & Mark Award.

Standing out among them are European co-productions such as Ashes by Mexican actor-director Diego Luna, Sad Girlz by fellow Mexican Fernanda Tovar, Flies by her compatriot Fernando Eimbcke, Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building by their fellow countryman Bruno Santamaría Razo and The Meltdown by Chile's Manuela Martelli. The section will be brought to a close by Paraguayan helmer Marcelo Martinessi, with another production involving the European continent, Narciso. It is worth noting that many of these titles previously passed through the festival at the project stage, either in the Co-Production Forum or in WIP Latam - including Flies and Six Months in a Pink and Blue Building, both prizewinners in those sections.
