CANNES 2011 Un Certain Regard

Attractive line-up with big names

by

With Gus Van Sant as opener (see news), Bruno Dumont, Kim Ki-duk, Hong Sangsoo, Robert Guédiguian, Andreas Dresen and Eric Khoo, there is no shortage of star names in the Un Certain Regard line-up, which is part of the official selection for the 64th Cannes Film Festival (May 11-22, 2011), unveiled today in Paris.

Of the 19 features in the line-up, six are by European directors. Germany’s Andreas Dresen returns to the Un Certain Regard with Halt Auf Freier Strecke, after winning a Coup de Cœur Jury Award in this section in 2008 (for Cloud 9). Romania’s Catalin Mitulescu returns with Loverboy, after attracting attention there in 2006 (with How I Spent the End of the World [+see also:

). France’s Pierre Schoeller is also making a comeback with The Exercise of State (see news), after showing Versailles in 2008.

Meanwhile, it’s a first time in this selection for seasoned French directors Bruno Dumont (Cannes Camera d’Or in 1997 and two-time winner of the Grand Prize in 1999 and 2006) and Robert Guédiguian (in competition in 2002), who will unveil their latest works: respectively, Hors Satan (see news) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (formerly known as Les Pauvres Gens – see news), respectively.

Finally, Norwegian director Joachim Trier completes the European delegation, making his Cannes debut with Oslo, August 31st (see news). But we could also add another film to the list of European fare: majority French production Where Do We Go Now? by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki (one of the main attractions in the Directors’ Fortnight 2007 with Caramel [+see also:
