Coixet and Balagueró-Plaza back on set

After several weeks in which Spanish film news seemed to focus solely on the various festivals taking place across the country, two of this year’s most eagerly-awaited projects have got underway.

One of Spain’s most international directors, Isabel Coixet, gets back behind the camera for Map of the Sounds of Tokyo. Meanwhile, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza – who directed REC [+see also:

, one of the box office sensations of 2007 – have started filming the sequel. The two productions are poles apart, with Coixet’s an auteur work and REC 2 a genre film like its predecessor.

Coixet’s sixth feature, a romantic thriller, is produced by Mediapro and Versátil Cinema and will be sold internationally by Imagina International Sales.

As the title suggests, Map of the Sounds of Tokyo is set in the Japanese capital, where the six-week shoot will take place. Written by the Catalan director, the film centres on Ryu, a delicate young woman who is hired to murder the Spaniard David (Sergi López). Meanwhile, a sound technician obsessed with the noises of the Japanese metropolis becomes the silent witness to these events.

REC 2 – which started shooting on Monday in Barcelona – is produced by Filmax. Little is known about the plot, which the directors prefer to keep under wraps. However, it appears that Balagueró and Plaza have kept the same artistic team who worked on the first instalment.

The latter enjoyed immense box office success (over €8m grossed for 1.4m admissions in Spain and over €21m worldwide).

Rumour has it that REC 2 will pick up a few hours after first film ended and Manuela Velasco – who won the Goya for Best Female Newcomer for REC – will once again play the lead role.
