Almodóvar returns to shorts with La concejala antropófaga

Just over a month before the release of Broken Embraces (see news), Pedro Almodóvar has announced his return to short film, after a 30-year break from the form. La concejala antropófaga (“The Man-Eating Town Councillor”) will be broadcast simultaneously on Canal + and the network’s website on Friday, February 13, as part of a special programme dedicated to the director.

The short – a monologue written for actress Carmen Machi – has been described by production company El Deseo as “deliriously funny, offbeat and daring”. The film marks a return to the director’s more subversive side, in the same vein as Pepi, Luci, Bom and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

However, La concejala antropófaga – filmed in a corner of the Broken Embraces set – owes more to improvisation. It is the result of the “whim on the part of the filmmaker”, who wanted to emphasise that the short is completely different in tone and style from his new feature.
