THE SEA WALL
by Rithy Panh
synopsis
Only a dam against the sea tides can save the rice-fields owned by the indomitable woman of property, a living symbol of the now-defunct French colonial society in Indochina, and a strict mother who battles against her two children’s dreams of emancipation. When the rich Chinaman Monsieur Jo falls in love with teenage Suzanne, the mother must decide her fate, as well as that of her land.
