Eugenio Cappuccio: Life suspended

by

One in two will make it: this is the unnatural selection carried out by disease when it indiscriminately disrupts daily life, whether it be that of a young, go-getting lawyer or a middle-aged truck driver.

(lit. “One in Two”), explores those moments of suspension in life, when you do not know whether it will end or continue.

The director reappropriates here the theme of his preceding film, Volevo solo dormirle addosso (2004, presented at the Venice Film Festival): the trauma of the upheaval of an ostensible well-being that leads to the discovery of what is truly important in life. The young manager forced to fire his co-workers in the previous film is here an ambitious lawyer in a frantic Genoa who discovers he – perhaps – has cancer.

This “perhaps” is the centre around which revolves the entire film, which was brought to life by producer Beppe Caschetto who, along with ITC Movie and in co-production with RAI Cinema, made it on a budget of approximately €2m.

Cappuccio boarded the project that was tied, from the beginning, to actor Fabio Volo, appearing here in his third film. Just as Volo embodies the lawyer Lorenzo Maggi with naturalness and conviction, the rest of the cast is equally centred and complements him perfectly: Ninetto Davoli (an icon of 11 of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s films) is truck driver Giovanni; Giuseppe Battiston, a partner in Lorenzo’s law firm; Anita Caprioli is Lorenzo’s girlfriend Silvia; and finally, the young Tresy Taddei.
