The big winner of the evening, however, was Mijke de Jong’s divorce drama Tussenstand, which premiered at Locarno. It went home with four awards: Best Director, Best Actress for Elsie de Brauw, Best Sound and the Critics’ Award. The Lemming Film production will be released commercially by Cinemien early November.

Nanouk Leopold’s multi-generational family drama Wolfsbergen went into the race with most nominations and finally went home with two Golden Calves: for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor for Flemish veteran Jan Decleir.

Further awards went to Vincent van Warmerdam for his score for the racial drama Kicks; Marcel Hensema for his role as a rock ‘n’ roll manager in Wild Romance and Sylvia Hoeks for her supporting role in Jos Stelling’s tragicomedy Duska, the Netherlands’ contender for an Oscar nomination this year.

The Audience Award went to another crowd-pleasing children’s film, Mischa Kamp’s Waar is het Paard van Sinterklaas?, a sequel to the local box office hit Winky’s Horse. It will be released by Warner Bros on Thursday.
