swept the board at the 4th Argentinean National Film Awards. It triumphed in 13 categories, including all the main ones (Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress), as well as Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Art Direction and Best Make-up. In other words, it topped practically every category.

Moreover, The Secret in Their Eyes, which was co-produced by Spain (54%, via Tornasol Films) and Argentina (46%), will represent the South American country in the race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and is tipped to be one of the final five nominees. Campanella, who was born in Buenos Aires and has Spanish nationality, was previously nominated in 2001 for Son of the Bride (also co-produced by Tornasol Films).

Blending film noir and romantic tragedy, The Secret in Their Eyes has won over critics and marks a triumphant return to film for a director who has focused on television work in recent years.

In fact, the film, which some feel was the rightful winner at the latest San Sebastian Festival, has become one of this season’s hits, not so much due to its box office takings (which are, at any rate, excellent and currently stand at €5.2m), but to its extraordinary staying power (since its first weekend, its admissions have multiplied by 7.2 and it’s still showing after 12 weeks in theatres). This is a sign that word-of-mouth publicity has worked wonders (this is only the case with arthouse films, going beyond the more or less short-lived promotional campaigns).

But this doesn’t seem to be the limit for the film, which is well-placed for a Goya nomination and perhaps an Oscar, which would attract even more attention.

The film is being sold internationally by Latido Films.
