film profile] by Alante Kavaite – the only French production in official competition at the AFI Fest (November 1-2), which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – will be presented on Sunday and Monday in Los Angeles, while two market screenings will take place at the American Film Market, which kicked off on Wednesday.

Produced by Antoine Simkine for Les Films d'Antoine, the directorial debut feature by the Lithuanian director (who also wrote the script) stars Emilie Dequenne, Ludmila Mikael, Jacques Spiesser and Mathieu Demy and recounts an investigation bordering on fantasy.

Charlotte (Dequenne), a sound engineer, learns of her mother’s (Mikael) murder in her country house. On arrival at the scene, Charlotte realises how little she knows about her mother’s life in the village. As the police are making no headway and the place seems to hold some secrets, she uses her own equipment to carry out a proper investigation.

Listening to a recording that she made in the house of the murder, she discovers a strange phenomenon: the sounds of the past mix with the sounds of the present. This leads the young woman into an obscure universe, where each revelation brings her one step closer to madness.

The €2.09m Fissures received pre-sales financing from Canal + in addition to €430,000 in advances in receipts from the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC), €270,000 from the Ile de France and funding from the Centre region.

Sold internationally by Wide Management, the feature – whose script was chosen for a US remake by Joe Dante’s distribution company – will be released in France in 2007 (Océan Films).
