A film about the bomb attack on the Munich beer fest

by

- Since the start of the month, a film about the September 1980 bomb attack on the famous “Oktoberfest” has been shooting in the Bavarian capital. Starring Benno Fürmann

While he continues to seek distribution for his directorial debut, the thriller Ein schmaler Grat, Munich-born producer, screenwriter, and director Daniel Harrich has since October 2 been shooting a film titled Oktoberfest, das Attentat in and around his home town. This eloquently-titled project is to recount the tragic bomb attack that killed 13 and wounded 200 others at Munich’s famous beer fest on September 26, 1980, after it was set off by a German far-right terrorist.

Even if the investigation concluded that the latter (who died during the explosion and was only identified thanks to a passport found on the scene, as his remains had been dispersed) had acted alone, some continue to fight for the case to be re-opened, including journalist Ulrich Chaussy, who was a reporter for Bavarian television channel BR at the time. Harrich has made Chaussy the hero of his film, as a sort of homage to investigative journalism, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Chaussy himself.

The journalist is being played by the charismatic Benno Fürmann (photo), alongside actress and director Nicolette Krebitz, Heiner Lauterbach, Jörg Hartmann, August Zirner, Miroslav Nemec, Anna Grisebach, and Udo Wachtveitl. Shooting is set to continue until November 7.

Oktoberfest, das Attentat is produced by Harrich’s production company, diwafilm, in co-production with channels BR, SWR, and Arte. The film is due out next autumn.
