Cinéfondation selects Szumowska, Vieira da Silva, Segre and Mandico

Fifteen feature film projects have been selected for the fifth edition of the Cannes Festival Cinéfondation Workshop. Europe is represented by Poland’s Malgorzata Szumowska (who recently won Best Film of 2008 at the Polish Film Awards for 33 Scenes from Life [+see also:

); Portugal’s Hugo Vieira Da Silva (Special Mention at Locarno for Body Rice [+see also:

); France’s Bertrand Mandico and Italy’s Andrea Segre.

Other chosen directors include Lebanon’s Danielle Arbid (whose A Lost Man [+see also:

screened in 2007 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight); Morocco’s Faouzi Bensaidi (discovered in the Un Certain Regard section in 2003 with A Thousand Months and Venice Days 2006 with WWW: What a Wonderful World [+see also:

); and Argentina’s Diego Lerman.

Created in 2005 to help emerging or established directors supplement their film financing, the Workshop will enable the chosen filmmakers to attend Cannes with their producers from May 15-22 and hold individual meetings with professionals interested in their projects. The Book of Projects will be available on April 15 on the Cinéfondation website.
