, won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 34th Gdynia Polish Film Festival. The jury’s choice came as no surprise, for this film is a perfect example of the new quality of Polish cinema: it is not just a well-told story, but also the result of a polished creative idea.

"This festival has been the best in many years," commented jury president Krzysztof Krauze, at the awards ceremony on Saturday evening. "Something wonderful is happening to Polish cinema. The new cinema is emerging with force; the films are made from the heart and with honesty. I envy those who haven’t yet seen these films and will discover them".

Most Polish critics share this opinion: the 34th Gdynia Festival has marked a turning point for local cinema. We are seeing a movement focused on formal exploration. Such is the case with The Reverse, which combines the black comedy and thriller genres, all immersed in a stylised vision of 1950s reality.

The film earned two Golden Lions for director Lankosz and producer Jerzy Kapuściński (KADR studio), as well as Best Actress (Agata Buzek), Best Cinematography (Marcin Koszalka), Best Soundtrack (Wlodzimierz Pawlik), Best Supporting Actor (Marcin Dorociński) and Best Make-up (Miroslawa Wojtczak, Ludmila Krawczyk and Waldemar Pokromski).

. Meanwhile, the jury gave Piotr Dumala’s The Forest (which blends animation and live-action shots) a Special Award for its outstanding artistic qualities.

Finally, the Platinum Lions were presented to Kazimierz Kutz and Jerzy Hoffman.

From next year onwards, the Polish Film Festival will be held in May.
