La Bella Gente triumphs at Annecy

The Grand Prize at the 27th Annecy Italian Film Festival was awarded to Ivano de Matteo’s La Bella Gente (“The Beautiful People”), which also won the CICAE (International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas) Prize.

Produced over four weeks by X Film for €450,000 and scripted by Valentina Ferlan, the film stars Monica Guerritore, Antonio Catania, Victoria Larchenko and Elio Germano. It traces the misfortunes of a family who take in a young, Eastern European prostitute with the aim of saving her. But their generous intentions soon clash with personal interests.

The jury presided by Irene Bignardi gave a special prize to Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel’s La Pivellina [+see also:

picked up the Audience Award. In the documentary category, the Grand Prize went to Giovanna Massimetti and Paolo Serbandini’s 211: Anna and a special prize to Gabriele Vacis’ Uno Scampolo di Paradiso (“A Scrap of Paradise”).

Finally, the Annecy Italian Film Festival this year presented the Sergio Leone Prize for Lifetime Achievement to Edoardo Winspeare.
