by

The Education of Fairies by José Luis Cuerda is probably the most interesting European proposal to be released in a weekend marked by the première of other nine titles: Patrick Alessandrin's Mauvais Esprit (Spain/France), Gilles Legrand's Malabar Princess (France), Todo el bien del mundo (Argentina), Mujeres Infieles (Chile), Shutter (Thailand), Marebito (Japan), Phil Nibbelink's Romeo & Juliet. Sealed With a Kiss (US), The Squid and the Whale (US) and Scary Movie 4 (US).

For his first feature film since 1999, Goya winner José Luis Cuerda (Butterfly's Tongue) decided to adapt Didier Van Cauwelaert's best-selling novel L'Education d'une fée, a story in which, according to the director, "all the characters are in crisis; their wings have been cut and they are looking for their place in this word".

In the centre of the plot there is Nicolás, a toy inventor who meets the woman of his dreams on a plane trip. Ingrid is a widow and has a son that Nicolás always wished to had. The three of them begin a new life together but just as when everything seemed perfect Ingrid abandons them, spreading an unexpected crisis on the character's lives.

The film has an international cast headed by Argentinean star Ricardo Darín (Nicolás), French actress Irène Jacob (Ingrid) and Spanish singer-turned actress Bebe Rebolledo (who will soon be seen in Julio Medem's upcoming film Caótica Ana) as a young Algerian women, seen by Ingrid's son Raúl (Víctor Valdivia) as the potential fairy who might save their lives.

The Education of Fairies is being co-produced by three Spanish companies (Gerardo Herrero's Tornasol Films, Finales Felices and Messidor Films), in collaboration with Les Productions Lazennec (France), Madragoa Filmes (Portugal) and Pol-ka Producciones (Argentina). Local distribution is being handled by Alta Films.
